Confederate Navy's Stealth Weapon - My Newspaper Column

Today we have many sophisticated weapons such as the world as never seen. We have stealth bombers and many of our navy ships contain some sort of stealth technology. So it might be amazing to some people that there was a stealth weapon used nearly 150 years ago in the American Civil War.

Many historians agree that the Confederate navy was the first to use a submarine to sink an enemy ship. That’s exactly what happened on a cold February night in 1864 when a little vessel known as the H.L. Hunley submerged and attached a torpedo-like device to the U.S.S. Housatonic and blew it up. There’s little doubt that in those times a submarine would certainly have been considered a stealth weapon.

The Union had a blockade in place around the port of Charleston, South Carolina, and it was from that harbor that the little Hunley departed in search of an enemy ship. With eight men aboard, the commander of the Confederate submarine, Lt. George Dixon, had orders to attack any Union vessel he might encounter.

And although their mission had been accomplished, the men in the Hunley never returned to receive the gratitude and laurels that would have no doubt been heaped upon them for their heroic accomplishment. It is believed that the Hunley sank during its attack on the Housatonic or shortly thereafter.

The men in the little submarine all died in the attack, but because of their previously unheard-of actions beneath the sea, they will forever be remembered for beginning a phase in naval warfare that continues to progress with new innovations and larger and more powerful submarines.

There is no doubt that the Hunley was a deathtrap to operate. The men had to crawl through a 4-foot-tall passageway just to get to their places on a long, low bench. Each of them sat down at a hand crank attached to the Hunley’s propeller shaft. The ship was completely powered by the hands of the crew.

The narrow top-secret submarine, built in Mobile, Alabama, by Horace Hunley from cast iron and wrought iron with a hand-cranked propeller, arrived in Charleston in 1863 while the city was under siege by Union troops and ships.

The Hunley sank twice in sea-trial accidents, killing 13 crew members including its namesake, Horace Hunley. The Confederate navy hauled the sub up twice and recovered the bodies of the crew. But because of its innovative characteristics, the Confederates didn’t give up on the little vessel and stuck with their plan to use it to attack Union ships.

Thanks to the dedicated effort of many determined individuals, the Hunley was found in 1995 and raised in 2000. After it was recovered, a partnership was formed by those interested in restoring the Hunley. Aptly named “The Hunley Project,” the group had spent more than $22 million on the restoration through 2010.

According to Michael Drews, director of Clemson’s Warren Lasch Conservation Center, scientists have found the vessel to be a more sophisticated feat of engineering than historians had thought. “It has the ballast tanks fore and aft, the dive planes were counterbalanced, the propeller was shrouded,” Drews said. “It’s just got all of the elements that the modern submarines have, updated.”

Drews said there had been previous submarines, but the Hunley was designed to sail in the open ocean and built for warfare – that was cutting-edge technology at the time.

Recently, for the first time since it was recovered, people were treated to an unobstructed view of the 42-foot-long submarine after a massive steel truss that had been covering the top of the Hunley was removed capping 10 years of careful preservation.

From the time it was brought to the surface over a decade ago, the submarine has been kept in a 90,000 gallon tank of fresh water to keep it from rusting.

It’s interesting to note that most of the men aboard the Hunley weren’t even from the South. Forensic scientists believe four of the men were from northern Europe. One of the crew was from Maryland, a slaveholding state that didn’t secede from the United States when the Civil War erupted in 1861.

Only two crewmen were from slaveholding states and George Dixon – who led the Hunley on its historic but doomed mission and became an immortal hero of the Confederacy – was from Ohio where slavery was illegal.

Dialogue from an old movie (I don’t recall which one) came to mind when I read the obituary of John H. Clayton.

The film depicted an intense battle and many men were being killed. One of the actors said, “Where do we find men such as these? Men who will charge into combat and die for a cause, without any regard for their own life.”

Apparently, Clayton was that type of man. A resident of Leesville, Texas, John Clayton fought for the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. He was wounded twice and became a prisoner of war during that conflict — a man so resolute in his belief of the Southern cause that he wouldn’t accept a pension because it was paid with “federal money.”

The following tribute to John H. Clayton appeared in The Gonzales Inquirer in April of 1937 – it has not been edited and appears as it did when first published.

John H. Clayton, 95, last of old Confederate veterans of Gonzales County was given fitting services at Leesville on Sunday, April 4. He died in the Texas Confederate Home at Austin on April 3.

Refusing to take the oath of allegiance to the Union at the end of the war he never received his discharge from the army, and remained true to the Confederate Cause until his death.

He was a prisoner of war at Fortress Monroe when the North-South fight came to a close. The aged veteran related many times before his death the story of how he refused to take the oath of allegiance to the Union. He said that he was released along with other prisoners to rejoin Lee’s army and take the oath enmassee. Once out of prison he escaped to New York and took a boat bound for Texas.

John H. Clayton was born in Portsmouth, Va., March 6, 1842. He came to Texas prior to the Civil War and was said to have been one of the signers of the secession. When the war began he returned to his native state of Virginia and joined the Confederate army, enlisting in Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. He was wounded twice while seeing active service.

After reaching the coast of Texas at “Old Powder Horn,” Mr. Clayton went to Live Oak County where he settled near Oakville. He moved to the Leesville community in 1876 and made his home there until the last few years which he spent in the Confederate home at Austin. He went up the trail with cattle to Kansas from both Live Oak and Gonzales counties.

While he would never accept a Confederate pension, because he believed it was paid with “federal money," he had a desire during his declining days to go to the Confederate home where he could be in company with those old veterans who were companions in the war.

He died in the home at Austin on April 3 and his remains were brought back to Leesville for burial in the cemetery near his old home. Services were conducted in the Leesville Methodist church by Rev. C. Gamenthaler of Liberty Hill, a former pastor, who was assisted by Rev. G.C. Childress, present pastor.

The burial service was conducted by the Leesville Masonic Lodge of which he had been a member for many years. Active pallbearers were O.I. Littlefield, Z.T. Littlefield, G.N. Lincecum, Ves Downs, C.A. Haynes and Ben Clark. Honorary pallbearers included: W.M. Fly, D.U. Ramsay, Frank Hampton, Jake Nesloney, August Kaleis and Sam Jones.

His only surviving relative is Clayton Bouldin, a grandson living in Gonzales.

It is believed that Mr. Clayton was the last surviving Confederate veteran of Gonzales County, and was probably the oldest man of the county.

Christmas was revered by our ancestors

I think most folks will agree that Christmas is a very special time of the year; and with the old Lavaca County (Texas) Courthouse dressed in its finest holiday attire, one can’t help but get in a festive spirit.

Looking at the old courthouse, I think about people over the years that have enjoyed the lights and decorations on the square in Hallettsville, Texas, and indeed downtown scenes throughout America.

When I have the opportunity, I like to visit Pioneer Village in Gonzales, Texas, during the Christmas season. Walking through the complex, made up of actual log cabins from the past, makes me wonder about those days during America’s pioneer era and how Christmas was celebrated back then.

By the mid 1800s the American Christmas tradition included much of the same customs and festivities as it does today, including decorating trees, gift-giving, and Santa Claus.

Pioneers living in the western part of the country celebrated in a humble way. Those were difficult times for folks living on the frontier. But even in the face of blinding winter storms and savage December winds, a determined people would not let Christmas be forgotten.

Soldiers in frontier forts could be heard caroling at their remote outposts, the smell of venison roasting over an open hearth wafted upon the winds of the open prairie. It has been recorded that the hardy pioneers made every attempt to decorate their homes for the holidays with whatever natural materials looked attractive – they would use evergreens, pinecones, holly, nuts, and berries to give their modest cabins a festive appearance.

Usually the Christmas meal would be made up of fresh game, if possible, and for those more fortunate a beef or ham might be part of the fare. Information found in books and personal diaries reveal an assortment of gifts that were given back then – most were homemade, including corn husk dolls, carved wooden toys, knitted scarves, hats and socks.

American author Laura Ingalls Wilder, creator of the much-loved children’s series of “Little House” books, wrote of preparations for Christmas on the Kansas prairie: “Ma was busy all day long, cooking good things for Christmas. She baked salt-rising bread and Swedish crackers, and a huge pan of baked beans. She baked vinegar pies and dried-apple pies, and filled a big jar with cookies.”

That very Christmas, Laura Ingalls was delighted to find a shiny new tin cup, a peppermint candy, a heart-shaped cake, and a brand new penny in her stocking.

Visiting the past, we find that from the very beginning Americans have been a resilient people. It seems they have never let the tough times stop them from celebrating the birth of Christ.

These days, we see more attacks on Christian beliefs – we find that there are groups of people out there who want to destroy the celebrations at Christmas. They say that even the name “Jesus” offends them.

I believe that everyone has the right to their opinions, but they should not be allowed to force-feed their theologies, with the help of some members of the media, on a country that was founded on Christian principles and has a population made up of at least 70 percent Christian people.

In my opinion, we should follow the example of our pioneer ancestors and stand up for our beliefs and traditions. That being said, let me wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Sharia Law Deciding American Court Cases

The brilliant (sarcasm) Bill O'Reilly said that Sharia Law would never be allowed in America. Really Bill? It's here, thanks to the Muslim president Obama. If you voted for this man, you should hang your heads in shame. See the story below:

“Shariah Law and American Courts: An Assessment of State Appellate Court Cases,” published by the Center for Security Policy, is one of the most comprehensive studies I have ever seen. It covers more than 600 pages of material.

The following summary statement is shocking:

Our findings suggest that Shariah law has entered into state court decisions, in conflict with the Constitution and state public policy. Some commentators have said there are no more than one or two cases of Shariah law in U.S. state court cases; yet we found 50 significant cases just from the small sample of appellate published cases. Others state with certainty that state court judges will always reject any foreign law, including Shariah law, when it conflicts with the Constitution or state public policy; yet we found 15 Trial Court cases, and 12 Appellate Court cases, where Shariah was found to be applicable in the case at bar. The facts are the facts: some judges are making decisions deferring to Shariah law even when those decisions conflict with Constitutional protections. This is a serious issue and should be a subject of public debate and engagement by policymakers.

Once these types of decisions made in American courts become part of published law they can be used as precedent law for future cases. Anyone entering an American court will be bound by...

This was the plan from the start, the Muslims are going to rule Egypt and this is a bad thing for women living in that country - it's also not a good thing for Israel.

High-tech drones will not secure the Mexican border

Recently, the newspaper where I am employed ran a press release from Lavaca County (Texas) Sheriff Micah Harmon about the increasing problem of car thefts in the county being perpetrated by drug smugglers and illegal aliens.

According to the sheriff, small Lavaca County communities like Komensky and Moulton, which between the two have less than 1,000 citizens, are now on the routes being used by foreign criminals to transport their drugs, illegal aliens, weapons, and potential terrorist into the interior of the United States.

Harmon said people in these rural areas, who are always quick to help someone in distress, now have to be very careful about who they extend a helping hand.

No matter how you look at it, the blame for this increasing problem lies right at the feet of Congress and the current administration. When they were elected, they took an oath to protect the American people and they are obviously refusing to do it.

Organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the Hispanic racist group La Raza, and others are trying to make this out to be a racial issue when that is far from the truth. American citizens, of all races, are being put in danger by foreign criminals who simply do not care who they hurt as long as they get their drugs, cash, weapons, and human cargo to market.

Local law officers do not have the resources to fight this problem although they do an excellent job with the tools they have at hand. However, this illegal activity is only going to get worse until certain vote-pandering politicians decide to take it seriously, quit worrying about who they might offend, and send more aid to the Mexican border. In my opinion, that help should come in the form of “boots on the ground” and if that means sending our military to the border, so be it.

The Associated Press recently reported that one powerful Mexican drug cartel had plotted a military-style attack against U.S. assets in Mexico. Leaders of the Sinaloa cartel planned to hit government buildings such as embassies, consulates, or media outlets, according to a top lieutenant in the cartel. In one report, a cartel leader supposedly said, let’s send a message to the gringos and hit them in their own backyard.

We are fortunate that this particular plan was uncovered before any harm could be done; but how many more of these plans are in the works?

Americans should demand that leaders in the Department of Justice (DOJ) stop dangerous and brainless programs like “Fast and Furious,” where guns were allowed to be sold to known drug smugglers with the plan being to track the guns; these guns were never tracked and one of the weapons was used by a drug smuggler to kill U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian A. Terry. And so far, Attorney General Eric Holder, director of the DOJ, has not apologized directly to the Terry family.

The parents of Brian Terry are denouncing Holder as a liar, blaming him for their son’s death, and calling for him to step down. “If they never let the guns walk, maybe Brian would not have been out that day,” said Josephine, Terry’s mother. “I just can’t believe our own government came up with a program like this that [let] innocent people get killed.”

Last March, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano said security on the southern U.S. border is better than ever and that violence from neighbor Mexico hasn't spilled over in a serious way. I doubt that the parents of Brian Terry would agree with Napolitano’s ridiculous statement.

It was recently reported that the U.S. is sending more Predator unmanned aircraft (drones) to the border but experts agree that this program is very expensive and the drones really do not work that well when they are confronted by low clouds and rain. When operating conditions are favorable, they do a great job, but as usual, political correctness comes into play and the aircraft are unarmed making them useless to U.S. law enforcement should they be attacked on a large scale.

As drug cartels and terrorists become bolder, large-scale attacks against U.S. law officers become more likely to happen.

When push comes to shove, the only thing that is going to secure the Mexican border is to have more law enforcement and armed troops, if necessary, with orders to fire back when fired upon and most of all; protect the citizens of this country.

When criminals and terrorists are stopped at the border, the lives of people in rural America can return to normal without fear of giving someone a helping hand or worrying about pickup-truck loads of drug smugglers, illegal immigrants, or terrorists crashing through their fences.

Judge says school can ban American Flag shirts!

OK, folks, this one has sent my blood pressure soaring! I read this on Veterans Day, that a school can stop American kids from wearing an American flag shirt on Cinco de Mayo, whatever the hell that is, but the Hispanics can wear the colors of Mexico!!

I would like some feedback from Hispanic-Americans, not illegal aliens, on how they feel about this. Thousands of Hispanics have fought and died for America and now it comes to this. Our kids can't wear the flag because it will offend illegal aliens?

What this is saying is that it's alright for some slimy creep to burn an American flag anytime he wants, and this is Freedom of Speech, but when American kids want to show their pride and patriotism for their country, this is against the law on a holiday celebrated by foreigners!

I'll tell you this, I wear my colors in some way every single day of the year and nobody is going to stop that! You can bet my whole body will look like an American flag on Cinco de Mayo!

By God, I'm pissed and highly offended! We better vote out that sorry excuse for a president and start appointing judges who support the AMERICAN PEOPLE.

A Time to Honor our Veterans

It is right and praiseworthy that we have a special day to honor veterans of our nation’s armed forces. While Memorial Day is a tribute to all those who have died in action, Veterans Day honors all those who have served in the military – living and dead.

The younger group of today’s citizens may not realize just how important it is that our soldiers be honored for their service to this country. Unless they have been individually touched by our ongoing war against terror, many people cannot seem to comprehend that this country is in a battle for survival against a cold, ruthless enemy who has absolutely no regard for human life.

Let there be no doubt that this war is going to go on for a very long time and the enemy will continue to come after us regardless of which political party is in control of the government.

This enemy hates us because of our religious beliefs and way of life. We did not start this war but we sure better finish it for the sake of the generations of Americans to come.

It is important to remember that the men and women wearing the uniform are the ones who have volunteered to fight this brutal enemy while protecting the folks here on the home front. And in my opinion when a slimy politician or a so-called movie star decides to degrade our troops and call them “uneducated,” we should respond with our vote and by choosing where we spend our money for entertainment.

During World War II a group of Americans who have come to be known as “the greatest generation” saved this country and the entire world from the likes of Hitler and Japan. It’s hard to imagine what our living conditions would be like today had this courageous group not answered the call. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, they awoke the sleeping giant and their fate was sealed.

In the early part of the 1950s young soldiers froze in the brutal cold of Korea fighting against communist aggression. War was never officially declared and the conflict was called a police action. Nearly 1.8 million Americans served in Korea, of that number 54,200 were killed, 103,300 were wounded, and 8,200 missing in action.

Korea has since been called the “forgotten war” and those who fought there have never received the recognition due them.

From about 1960 through 1973 the United States was embroiled in the Vietnam War. Many people in this country opposed the conflict and participated in demonstrations which included burning the flag. Rather than be drafted a number of young Americans fled to Canada to await the war’s end. Returning soldiers from Vietnam were spit upon and called “baby killers.” Military personnel would often remove their uniforms to avoid confrontations with civilians.

But one thing should never be forgotten – when their country called the soldiers responded and did their duty. According to one source 58,239 were killed in action, 128,000 were wounded, and 14,000 were listed as missing in action.

It has been said that American soldiers in Vietnam never lost a face-to-face battle with the enemy and if the politicians had not placed restrictions on them; there is no doubt in my mind that they would have won the war as well.

Today we have Americans fighting and dying in the Middle East and other places around the world. They have volunteered to serve their country and protect those of us here at home. Our troops are the finest the world has ever seen and they are doing a remarkable job.

People who think it’s somewhat politically correct to criticize our troops and call them dumb for serving their country had better wake up. Because without the military there wouldn’t be a country – and there would not be a Hollywood, movie stars, and arrogant politicians – none of them being worthy enough to polish the boots of a soldier.

Salute to Service in Kemah, Texas!

Salute to Service! If you have the opportunity to attend this event, I hope you will do so. My brother, Joel, is one of the organizers and he will be on one of the buses bringing wounded soldiers from Ft. Sam Houston (San Antonio, TX) to Kemah. One of their stops will be at Buc-ee's on I-10 between Luling and Gonzales sometime Friday morning.

It's awesome to have the opportunity to thank these people who've done so much for us! I'm including a link to show you all the family-oriented events that will be happening this weekend in Kemah, Texas.

Time for conservatives to stand up for Herman Cain

Can you say "double standard?" Here is an excerpt from an old ABC News story: Quote from Jesse Jackson - "This is no time for evasions, denials or alibis," said the Baptist minister and former aide to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. "I fully accept responsibility and I am truly sorry for my actions."

The above statement was made by Jackson after he had an affair that produced an illegitimate child. He was carrying on this affair while he was counseling his buddy, Bill Clinton, who had oral sex with an intern in the Oval office while he was president! Talk about "birds of a feather."

The age of the daughter indicates Jackson, 59 (at the time), was likely having the affair with Karin Stanford, a 39-year-old worker at his Rainbow/PUSH Coalition office in Washington, even as he counseled President Clinton after public revelations of an affair with Monica Lewinsky, an intern at the White House.

Now let's fast forward to the present. Liberal Democrats and the "lame-stream" media are terrified of a black man, Herman Cain, because he is a conservative Republican who has a knack for reaching out to Americans and they are responding to his message by the thousands.

Cain has hardly any money and a very small staff, but yet conservative Americans are being drawn to him; mainly because he IS NOT a politician. Now so-called anonymous sources are accusing him of sexual harassment that supposedly took place back in the 90s. They are attacking him just like they did Supreme Court Justice, Clarence Thomas. The fact that a man can be black and a conservative Republican just drives liberals insane.

Perhaps Cain is guilty of some trivial occurrence many years ago, but people should wonder why these women are just now coming forward? Perhaps someone is paying them, you think?

Americans, by and large, are sick and tired of these attacks on patriotic citizens of this country. And it came as no big surprise to me that some Republican candidates would jump at the chance to crucify Cain. I knew exactly who it would be and so far I'm right. "Righteous Rick" Santorum and "Squeaky Clean" Michelle Bachmann are the first to use this unproven accusation against Cain. I doubt that either one of these hypocrites have a chance in hell of winning the nomination.

As for me, it's going to take a lot larger event than this one to change my feelings about Herman Cain and if I had my way, Herman and Newt would be the ideal ticket. Newt would eat Obama's lunch in any debate on foreign affairs, and Herman is an economic genius.

Mexican drug smuggler released - U.S. Border Patrol agent jailed for two years! Outrageous!

I should stop watching the news before I have a damn heart attack. Once again, a U.S. Attorney's office sends one of our brave Border Patrol agents to jail for two years and turns a Mexican drug smuggler loose!

How much more of this crap are we going to stand for before we put a stop to it? Another case where the hypocrites in the Mexican government are getting involved and demanding that our brave law officers be prosecuted, and the Obama administration complies.

The American people should have demanded, a long time ago, that Obama be impeached and his stooge Eric Holder be fired! See the story below.

The Washington Times - A U.S. Border Patrol agent has been sentenced to two years in prison for improperly lifting the arms of a 15-year-old drug smuggling suspect while handcuffed — in what the Justice Department called a deprivation of the teenager’s constitutional right to be free from the use of unreasonable force.

Agent Jesus E. Diaz Jr. was named in a November 2009 federal grand jury indictment with deprivation of rights under color of law during an October 2008 arrest near the Rio Grande in Eagle Pass, Texas, in response to a report that illegal immigrants had crossed the river with bundles of drugs.

EPA declares hay a pollutant, goes after small farms and ranches

It seems that not a day goes by that Americans don’t wake up to some sort of bad news happening here at home and around the world.

Along with the bad news, we don’t hear much good, but we sure hear a lot of things that are called “politically correct” – in fact these politically-correct items are downright ridiculous to people who have a shred of common sense in their heads.

For those who may not have heard the latest news from the supporters of political correctness; let me share one of these idiotic gems with you.

This tidbit should arouse the interest of anyone who has anything to do with hay. That’s right; I said “hay.” Let’s see, that could include those who go on hayrides, those who grow, cut, and bale hay; or non-country boys like me who just enjoys smelling hay during a summer rain, or perhaps chewing on a sprig of it every now and then.

I feel sure that farmers and ranchers would be interested in knowing that our government, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to be exact, has decided that hay is a pollutant and people who don’t follow the rules and properly store it could get in trouble. Sounds pretty ridiculous, don’t you think? But believe me there is more to this story.

An organization known as Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund, United Stockgrowers of America (R-CALF USA) say on their website that they are dedicated to fighting for the U.S. cattle producer. They held their annual convention recently and a Kansas cattle feeder, Mike Callicrate, gave a presentation on the nation’s new country-of-origin labeling (COOL) law. Taking questions after his speech, Callicrate was asked if hay had indeed been declared a pollutant. His answer was “yes.”

“Now that the EPA has declared hay a pollutant, every farmer and rancher that stores hay, or that leaves a broken hay bale in the field is potentially violating EPA rules and subject to an EPA enforcement action,” Callicrate said. “How far are we going to let this agency go before we stand up and do something about it?”

Callicrate makes a good point – the EPA has garnered more power under the current administration and some of their absurd regulations are severely hurting the job market and the economy as well.

R-CALF USA claims that the EPA is pandering to the world’s largest beef packer, JBS-Brazil, and mega-feedlots in the U.S. owned by large companies including Cargill, Cactus Feeders, Inc. and Friona Industries. R-CALF USA complained to the U.S. Department of Justice saying that small feedlots, like the one owned by Callicrate, are being pressured to quit the industry so large beef packers and corporate feedlot owners can increase their capacities.

Callicrate said the EPA is turning a blind eye toward the mega-feedlots that are a real risk for pollution and going after family operations to take over the entire live cattle supply chain. “Along with my feedlot, the EPA has filed enforcement actions against five other smaller feedlots, including one with only 400 cattle.” According to Callicrate, the EPA is overtly partnering with the corporate beef packers to put the independent family operations out of business.

Once again, this is another example of the federal government intruding into the business of independent entrepreneurs in this country. As usual, this is complete stupidity because it is these small operations that supply most of the jobs in America. The federal government would be better advised to clean up the pollution in Washington D.C. instead of the natural happenings in rural America.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa

Villaraigosa is a former member of the racist Mexican separatist group MEChA, which openly advocates for the “liberation of Aztlan” – the imagined land which would consist of a “re-conquered” (“reconquista”) American Southwest.

When a state councilman, Villaraigosa went to Mexico City to personally thank then-President Ernesto Zedillo in helping defeat Proposition 187, which would have banned welfare, healthcare and social services for illegal aliens in California.

More recently Villaraigosa created anger among his neighbors when he built a 6-foot wall around his mansion – despite a local ordinance that only permits a maximum height of 42 inches. This from a man who opposes a border fence of any height on our Southern border, and who launched a boycott against the state of Arizona for daring to enforce the law against illegal invaders.

Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley

O’Malley is the latest hero for illegal aliens and the multitude of non-profits which use taxpayer moneys to push for amnesty laws. O’Malley has called illegal aliens the “New Americans” – an insult to legal immigrants and citizens. O’Malley also pushed through the unpopular “Maryland Dream Act” late on a Friday night, to provide illegal aliens with in-state tuition. Later, activists led a historic drive to reverse this law, and put it on the ballot for the voters to reject in 2012.

O’Malley has also steered millions in taxpayers dollars to Maryland’s version of La Raza: Casa de Maryland, which uses those funds to lobby for pro-illegal alien rules and legislation. Casa is notorious for street thug bullying against opponents and race-based threats against legislators to push them to support their agenda.

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumpka

Trumpka – who is supposed to represent the American union worker – has instead worked to undermine those workers by spending millions to loby Congress in support of amnesty legislation such as the Federal DREAM Act, which woulde provide amnesty to more than 1.4 million illegal aliens. Trumpka is also in full support of Obama’s recent moves to halt deportations and issue work permits to illegals – which will hurt his own members by depressing wages nationwide, but increase his own power by creating new union workers from whom he can confiscate dues.

Trumpka also personally led protesters to Arizona after the passage of S.B. 1070 – a law which creates jobs for American workers by removing illegal aliens from work in Arizona – empowering Sheriffs like Joe Arpaio to liberate those jobs for legal workers to take.

After all his talk about a plan to create jobs for Americans, Obama climbs back aboard his bus, which was made in Canada, and heads for a vacation on Martha's Vineyard. At the same time he declares amnesty for some 300,000 illegal aliens and has a plan not to deport them, but to let them stay and work in the U.S.

You can bet that these illegals will be taking American jobs while getting food stamps, free health care, and welfare. In the meantime, over 200,000 military vets (of all races), who've been defending this nation are unemployed and desperately trying to find work.

Millions of Americans are unemployed and this president uses a political ploy in trying to garner Hispanic votes by giving amnesty to illegal-alien criminals. Doesn't this vacationing fool have the sense to know that many Hispanic-Americans are also out of work?

And what about folks in the black community where their unemployment rate is nearly twice that of the nation's average? But I guess we need to remember that he's only half-black! His white half is pandering to the Hispanic racist group La Raza, while he hobnobs with rich, white liberals.

I totally agree with Rep. Allen West (R-Florida), blacks need to get off the Democrat "plantation," join the Tea Party, and vote this man out of office in 2012 - send him on a permanent vacation that we don't have to pay for!

11th Amendment to the Constitution: "The Judicial power of the United States shall not be construed to extend to any suit in law or equity, commenced or prosecuted against one of the United States by Citizens of another State, or by Citizens or Subjects of any Foreign State."

From the way I read the 11th Amendment, no illegal alien should ever be able to sue an American citizen. Why isn't this being enforced? Border Patrol Agents, Ramos and Compean, as well as, Edwards County Deputy Sheriff Gilmer Hernandez should be given a full pardon and have that felony removed from their records so they can return to law enforcement if they so desire.

Mystery of Lavaca River Cannon remains unsolved

The story goes that the old cannon was discovered by a group of kids searching for a good place to swim in the Lavaca River – at least that’s the way I heard it shortly after moving to Gonzales in 1984.

I’ve written about the cannon more than once, the first time being some 14 years ago when I was working for The Gonzales Inquirer – that original column brought folks out of the woodwork providing me with more information than I could ever have imagined. People from Gonzales and Lavaca counties contacted me with their versions of the tale – information that had been passed down to them by their parents, grandparents, and various acquaintances over the years.

Also, I would like to note that after my original column was published, I faxed a copy to the Texas Historical Commission – evidently the THC wasn’t interested because I never heard from them.

Most folks are of the opinion that this cannon belonged to Mexican Gen. Santa Anna’s army. Legend has it that the cannon was dumped into the Lavaca River or some nearby stream because it was becoming a burden on the Mexican army. After the fall of the Alamo, Santa Anna was attempting to move swiftly and catch the retreating Texas army being led by Gen. Sam Houston.

What stirred me to write about the cannon again, is that; first of all, there is no doubt in my mind that it exists, somewhere, and secondly because I’ve recently found another article about people who were searching for it in March of 1971.

The report from the March 30, 1971, issue of the Hallettsville New Era-Herald contained information about a group using metal detectors that would register things below the water as deep as 27 feet. They were searching in a location known as Sycamore Pool; the article implied that there may have been two cannons in that vicinity. To make a long story short, however, they were either unsuccessful in their search or somebody has it and is not going to give it up.

I am going to share a bit of information from that very first article that I wrote years ago. While researching Gonzales Inquirer newspapers from 1932, I came across three different articles from October and November of that year which mentioned the old cannon in Lavaca County. The articles had originated in the San Antonio Express-News and were picked up by the Inquirer.

One fellow named W.G. Leazer of Kerrville responded to the article, published in 1932, and was quoted as saying: “… I know there is an old brass cannon in a large creek some 30 miles east of Gonzales. This cannon was found by boys in swimming. They tried to pull it out with a horse, but could not.”

Another man responded to the Express-News article; Eric Brunkenhoefer, of San Antonio, wrote, “I knew a man at Moulton, Jacob Tomasko, now dead, who had knowledge of a buried cannon in that part of the state. In 1923 or 1924 he wanted myself to go with him to this place and try to recover this cannon, but I don’t think it was ever attempted.”

Jacob Tomasko’s son, W.J. Tomasco of Shiner, wrote a letter saying that his father lived in the town of Moravia and had found a cannon on a small creek known as North Fork which empties into the Lavaca River. Tomasco also said his father (Jacob) told him the cannon was protruding from a sand bar. Jacob Tomasco told his son that he sat on the barrel of the cannon to eat his lunch.

Phil Hemmi, of Hallettsville, said that his dad, Urban Hemmi, told him that his (Urban’s) father, Johannes Hemmi, came to Lavaca County in 1885 at the age of 16; it seems that Johannes also talked about this cannon and how he used it as a diving board. He said it was about 100 yards from an old iron bridge.

Another article from the Inquirer in 1932 stated that some Hallettsville businessmen were interested in retrieving the cannon. Once again it was mentioned that the weapon was located at Sycamore Pool two miles above Hallettsville on the Lavaca River. There was another report that a cannon had been seen at a place known as Santa Anna crossing about one mile southeast of Breslau on the Lavaca.

In my research, so many locations are mentioned that we might possibly surmise that there is more than one cannon out there. Let’s see, there’s Sycamore Pool, North Fork, Robber’s Hole, Santa Anna crossing, Cotton Grove, Witting, Breslau, and Moravia, just to name a few, and I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if there aren’t more family stories out there that have the cannon or cannons in other locations.

But of one thing I’m certain, the cannon does exist – perhaps it has already been found and just kept secret – maybe we’ll never know for sure, but too many people have seen it for the story not to be true.

Fox News - The Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against Alabama's new controversial immigration law, essentially fighting Alabama on grounds similar to its legal battle with Arizona over that state's controversial law.

In both cases, the Justice Department argues that the states are overstepping their authority by wading into something that is a strictly federal responsibility: immigration enforcement.

Gov. Robert Bentley signed the Alabama law in June, but it's not set to take effect until Sept. 1. The law makes it a crime to be an undocumented immigrant in Alabama and allows law enforcement to detain individuals they have a "reasonable suspicion" of being in the country illegally. The law also makes it illegal to give undocumented immigrants rides and requires school districts to check on the immigration status of students who enroll.

The law is modeled on Arizona's immigration law, parts of which have been blocked by federal court. It's said to be the strictest state-level immigration law in the country.

The law has already faced lawsuits from civil rights groups and others, and Alabama religious leaders announced Monday their own lawsuit against the law, saying, "the bishops have reason to fear that administering of religious sacraments, which are central to the Christian faith, to known undocumented persons may be criminalized under this law."

Gallant Texas Ranger captain killed in Mexico - in 1893

Newspapers from the past are a great source for historical data. I’ve alluded to this fact many times before and still hold the opinion that the aged articles found in newspapers hold more truthful information than we get from some would-be historians.

That being said, I have always been interested in that elite group of law officers known as the Texas Rangers, and recently I came across another article regarding these men. This story was found in an old Hallettsville Herald (Texas) from 1893 and describes a fight between Rangers and smugglers on the Rio Grande.

Sadly, a brave Ranger captain named Frank Jones died in that battle. It seems ironic that 118 years later, Texas Rangers are still confronting smugglers and other criminals on the Rio Grande.

The newspaper account below says the fight occurred on Tres Jacales Island; the Handbook of Texas refers to the place as Pirate’s Island and says Jones was killed not far from there on June 30, 1893.

Other information found on the Internet claims that Capt. Jones and his men saw bandits leaving the island and chased them to the village of Tres Jacales, Mexico. Jones supposedly died in a firefight at that location.

Reports indicate that the lawmen were trying to serve a warrant for cattle rustling on Jesus-Maria Olguin and his son, Severio. The Olguins were well-known rustlers in the area.

According to the website, Officer Down, El Paso County Sheriff Simmons went to Juarez, Mexico, to request the return of Captain Jones' body. Mexican authorities filed a diplomatic protest, but returned his body days later.

Hallettsville Herald – July 6, 1893 – Report from Alpine, Texas

That section of the Texas border between Presidio and El Paso has long been the rendezvous of a numberless gang of cutthroats, robbers and smugglers, who have made it the most hideously criminal area in all the United States.

One of the bloodiest of their many bloody crimes was enacted today at Tres Jacales Island, in the Rio Grande, in the murder of Captain Frank Jones of Ranger Company D.

About daylight Captain Jones and six out of ten of the company surrounded a house on this island known to conceal a gang of smugglers, the exact number of whom was not known.

From the many different versions of the affair current here, it appears most plausible that Captain Jones went in advance of his company several hundred yards, presumably to negotiate for terms of surrender.

As soon as he appeared on the open field the crack of rifles was heard from the adobe walls and the gallant captain fell dead. The villains kept up a constant firing through the day, thus forbidding his followers to reach his body, which was exposed to the fierce rays of the sun.

Corporal Kirchner managed to make his was back to San Elxarro [San Elizario] and in response to a telegram from him 100 citizens and officers from El Paso were soon on a special train and bound for the scene of the murder. A body of volunteers from Ysleta also answered for service.

It is believed that many of the desperate characters of that section are rallying for the relief of their partners in crime, while all the Americans are armed to the teeth and determined to take the murderers dead or alive.

Captain Jones was 36 years old, the handsomest man in all the Trans-Pecos region, an officer unsurpassed in his line, bold and fearless as a lion and worshiped by his ranger boys.

He had been married six months. His father’s family live in Boerne, Texas, and he has relatives in Gonzales, Texas.

Hispanic judge rules in favor of illegal aliens against state of Texas

In my humble opinion, this ruling by Judge Orlinda Naranjo was racially and politically motivated. Instead of an American judge standing up for U.S. citizens, she took the side of foreign Hispanic workers.

She also sided with Hispanic racist groups against the state of Texas. And saying that Dept. of Public Safety (DPS) is denying driver's license to "legal immigrants" is simply not the truth. If they prove they're legal, they can get a license. The DPS requires them to prove that they are U.S. citizens and are in the country legally, and this is very important to this nation's security.

Could the judge's decision been politically motivated? Judge Naranjo, who has been described as a "highly respected Democrat," evidently doesn't like DPS policy - perhaps she wants to be sure that illegal aliens can get a driver's license - then they will have a valid I.D. and that opens the door for them to vote, even though they are not American citizens. This will guarantee more votes from foreigners, illegally of course, for Democrats and President Obama.

It seems the original law suit came about when a landscape company sued because they wanted their illegal-alien employees to be allowed to have Texas DLs.

Her ruling is outrageous, sickening and another reason for a Federal E-Verify law! However, we can take heart because Naranjo's term ends in 2014. See the story below:

Judge says school can ban American Flag shirts!

OK, folks, this one has sent my blood pressure soaring! I read this on Veterans Day, that a school can stop American kids from wearing an American flag shirt on Cinco de Mayo, whatever the hell that is, but the Hispanics can wear the colors of Mexico!!

I would like some feedback from Hispanic-Americans, not illegal aliens, on how they feel about this. Thousands of Hispanics have fought and died for America and now it comes to this. Our kids can't wear the flag because it will offend illegal aliens?

What this is saying is that it's alright for some slimy creep to burn an American flag anytime he wants, and this is Freedom of Speech, but when American kids want to show their pride and patriotism for their country, this is against the law on a holiday celebrated by foreigners!

I'll tell you this, I wear my colors in some way every single day of the year and nobody is going to stop that! You can bet my whole body will look like an American flag on Cinco de Mayo!

By God, I'm pissed and highly offended! We better vote out that sorry excuse for a president and start appointing judges who support the AMERICAN PEOPLE.
